Birth of a Kit

It's probably not something that  a lot of us think about when we are constructing kits, but apart from the etched brass and nickel silver frets, which these days are produced on computer using CAD (computer aided design) software, all the cast whitemetal and resin parts exist in the real world somewhere as a master.

A master is the original item that the moulds are made from which are subsequently used to create as many copies of the original as required in the kit. So next time you are constructing something like the bogie shown below, remember all these parts were originally hand crafted from raw material in order to produce a master from which all the parts are cast.

Modern Motive Power have very kindly given us access to pictures of the masters for some of their forthcoming kits.

Shown below are the bogie frames for a Class 150 Sprinter DMU
