Photographs

Photography of the real thing that should help when trying to achieve a prototypical look.

Whenever Dave and I get the opportunity to get up close and personal with locomotives or rolling stock, we do.

To us this is just another aspect of the hobby, we like our models to be as near to prototypical as is practical and when it comes to painting and weathering there is nothing like the real thing to copy from.

Our library of pictures currently stands at over 700 photographs, covering all the popular classes from class 02 up to class 56. More recent locomotives e.g. 66 will be included when the opportunity presents itself to get close to them.

Our photographs differ from what you will see in books and pictures captured from the Internet. Most are taken from only a few feet away from the subject at resolutions ranging from 2 million pixels upwards depending on the camera we have used. Because of this they are for the most part zoomable without loss of detail. For example, the picture below of a class 56 bogie was shot using a 2.4M pixel Canon Powershot. The original picture is 1600 x 1200 pixels in size and has been reduced here to 175 x 130 pixels.

Class 56 bogie    Class 56 bogie zoom 1    Class 56 bogie zoom 2
The second picture is a zoom of the first picture taken from the original image and resized to 175 x 130 pixels. The third picture is again taken from the original image and zoomed as far as my software will allow, again the image has then been resized to 175 x 130 pixels.

It is not possible to put all of the picturers online, each full size image is between 800k and 1MB in size and we simply do not have the room for these and all of the modeling pictures. The same applies to e-mail, while it is OK to send one or two pictures, a whole series would need to be broken down into several e-mails, very time consuming and not practicle.

Version 1.00 of our photo DVD containing approx 1200 photographs is now available in our Webshop - Click Here
